Journeyman Sheet Metal Worker


Primary Purpose

Fabricates, assembles, installs, and repairs sheet metal equipment products and structures.

Typical Duties

Selects gauge and type of sheet metal according to products being fabricated and knowledge of metal. Supervise and coordinate activities of assigned craft workers. Interpret specifications, blueprints and job orders as needed for area of supervision. Installs and directs installation of assemblies in building or work-site. Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety regulations. Establishes and adjusts work sequences to meet construction schedules, using knowledge of capacities of equipment and assigned personnel. Studies schedules and estimate worker-hour requirements for completion of job. Analyzes and resolves work problems. Maintains time records and coordinates schedules. May, upon employer's authorization, make cost estimates for contracts.

Requirements

Should be able to: Work within precise limits and standards of accuracy; perform a variety of duties which may change often... and rate information using measurable standards... plan, lay-out, fabricate, assemble, install and repair sheet metal parts, products and equipment, utilizing knowledge of working characteristics of metallic and non-metallic materials, machining and lay-out techniques, using hand-tools, power tools, machines, and equipment.

Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, or products specifications to determine sequence and methods of fabrication, assembling, and installing sheet metal products... Select gauge and type of sheet metal such as galvanized iron, copper, steel, aluminum, etc., or non- metallic materials such as plastic and fiberglass according to product specifications.

Lay-out and mark dimensions and reference lines on materials, using scribers, dividers, squares, and rulers, applying knowledge of shop mathematics and lay-out techniques to develop and trace patterns to product or parts... or use of templates.

Sets up and operates fabricating machines such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, etc., to cut bend, block and form or straighten materials. Shapes materials over anvil, block or other form, using hand tools. Trims, files, grinds, buffs, and smoothes surfaces, using hand tools and portable power tools. Welds, solders, bolts, rivets, screws, clips, caulks, and bonds component parts to assemble products, using hand tools, power tools, and equipment.

Installs assemblies in supportive framework according to blueprints, using hand tools, power tools, and lifting and handling devices. Inspects assemblies and installation for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments required.

Repair and maintain sheet metal products. May operate computer aided drafting (CAD) equipment to develop scale drawings of products or systems. May operate laser beam cutter or plasma-arc cutter to cut patterns from sheet metal

Workers must adhere to Sheet Metal Workers' Local Union 104 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Physical Demands

Must be able to: Stand or walk for long periods of time during a regular work day; use arms and hands to reach for, handle and manipulate objects; lift and carry materials weighing 50 to 100 pounds; climb up and down ladders, scaffolds and other climbing devices; carry tools and equipment; work while in stooped, kneeling, crouched, and crawling positions; be able to see naturally or with correction, to safely perform designated tasks.

Environmental and Weather Conditions

Must be able to: Perform assigned tasks under all types of environmental and weather conditions including severe cold, extreme heat, wet or dry weather and high winds.

Environmental conditions may include areas where toxic or caustics chemicals or fumes are in use or being stored.

Noise intensity level of 4; Close proximity to moving mechanical parts; Working in high, exposed levels as well as in close, cramped quarters.

May be required to operate or work around powder-actuated hand tools such as ram-sets, Hilti-guns, etc.,

Employees will not be subjected to hazardous conditions without the proper safety equipment and training relative to the work being done.
